An American Airlines Airbus A321-200N, registration N418AN performing flight
AA-298 (sched. dep Nov 12th, act. dep Nov 13th) from Honolulu,HI to Los Angeles,CA (USA), departed Honolulu's runway 08L and continued straight instead of turning right within 2nm as required due to terrain ahead. Air Traffic Control instructed the aircraft to increase climb and turn right, the aircraft increased climb and initiated the turn to the right about 6nm past the runway at about 4000 feet already over mountains rising up to about 2600 feet. The aircraft subsequently continued to Los Angeles for a safe landing about 4:50 hours later.
A passenger reported: "Upon leaving HNL, the flight took off on rwy 8L which is very unusual. Instead of immediately turning right after takeoff the flight continued in a straight line headed right for the Koolau Mountains and then appeared to barely miss the mountains and turned right to go out over the ocean. In person, the plane sounded like they had it at 100% trying to get away from the mountains."
The FAA told The Aviation Herald: "An air traffic controller instructed American Airlines Flight 298 to perform an expedited climb after the crew did not make the assigned turn while departing from Honolulu International Airport. The controller's actions ensured the aircraft remained safely above nearby terrain. The Airbus A321neo was flying to Los Angeles International Airport. The FAA is investigating the event, which occurred around 1 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Nov. 13."
