An American Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N9017P performing flight
AA-936 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Saint Thomas (Virgin Islands) with 85 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute at FL370 about 290nm east of Charlotte,NC (USA) when the crew decided to divert to Charlotte,NC (USA). The aircraft drifted down to FL240 and landed safely on Charlotte's runway 36C about 75 minutes after the decision to divert. After landing the crew advised they wanted an inspection of the right hand engine (CFM56) the cover of which had detached.
A replacement A319-100 registration N9021H reached Saint Thomas with a delay of 6 hours.
The occurrence aircraft returned to service after about 23.5 hours on the ground in Charlotte.
The airline reported the aircraft made a precautionary landing in Charlotte due to a mechanical issue, it was inspected for damage before the aircraft taxied to the gate, where passengers disembarked normally. The passengers were taken to Saint Thomas by another aircraft.
