An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N198UW performing flight AA-2828 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Phoenix,AZ (USA), was enroute at FL320 about 140nm northeast of Phoenix when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (CFM56) down after the engine emitted sparks and streaks of flames. The aircraft drifted down to FL240 and continued to Phoenix for a safe landing on runway 26 about 30 minutes after leaving FL320, the crew advised no assistance was needed but subsequently requested emergency services to follow them to the apron.

A passenger reported he took a video of the engine emitting the sparks and streaks of flames.

The aircraft is still on the ground 4 days later.
