An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N868NN performing flight AA-548 from Miami,FL (USA) to Georgetown (Guyana), was climbing out of Miami's runway 08R when the crew requested to level off at and was cleared to maintain 14,000 feet. A few minutes later the crew advised they were ready to continue the climb and were cleared to FL350, however, requested to level off shortly afterwards again and were cleared to maintain 16,000 feet. The crew advised they needed to return to Miami, but first needed to burn off fuel and requested a hold. The crew advised they had a pressurization issue. The crew advised they were not on oxygen and requested to descend to 10,000 feet to burn more fuel. After holding at 10,000 feet for another hour the crew returned to Miami for a safe landing on runway 09 about 1:50 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N850NN reached Georgetown with a delay of about 4 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 21.5 hours after landing.
