A British Airways Boeing 787-9, registration G-ZBKN performing flight
BA-8 from Tokyo Haneda (Japan) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL370 over the Beaufort Sea about 680nm northeast of Anchorage,AK (USA) when the crew declared PAN PAN and decided to turn around and divert to Anchorage reporting smoke in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely in Anchorage about 2 hours later.
The Canadian TSB reported the aircraft "experienced smoke in the cabin due to a portable device (phone) being stuck down the side of a passenger seat. The cabin was vented, and a Pan Pan was declared. The aircraft diverted to Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport (PANC), Alaska, USA."
The aircraft remained on the ground in Anchorage for about 3.5 hours, then continued to Toronto,ON (Canada) before carrying on to London the following day with a delay of 33 hours.
