An Air Canada Airbus A330-300, registration C-GKUG performing flight
AC-327 from Montreal,QC to Calgary,AB (Canada) with 285 people on board, was enroute at FL400 about 120nm northnortheast of Winnipeg,MB when the crew noticed a burning smell in the flight deck followed by indication that a circuit breaker had tripped. Subsequently the crew observed smoke from the center pedestal just below the standby compass, donned their oxygen masks and declared emergency. The aircraft landed safely on Winnipeg's runway 13 about 25 minutes later.
The Canadian TSB reported: "The operator's maintenance found the standby compass exhibited heat damage to an electrical connector. The instrument was replaced and tested."
