A Canadian North Boeing 737-200, registration C-GDPA performing flight
5T-226 from Yellowknife,NT to Cambridge Bay,NT (Canada), was enroute at FL310 about 180nm north of Yellowknife when the left hand engine (JT8D) engine oil quantity indication dropped to 1.0g. The flight crew asked cabin crew to check the left hand engine, cabin crew confirmed oil was leaking out of the #1 engine. The crew decided to return to Yellowknife, during the descent towards Yellowknife the oil pressure dropped prompting the crew to shut the engine down. The aircraft landed safely on Yellowknife's runway 34 about 45 minutes after the decision to return.
The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found a leak on the oil filter bypass switch transmitter inlet connection. An O-ring was replaced, the threads of the fitting cleaned, engine oil filters, magnetic plugs were also inspected as part of the windmilling inspection.
