A Chrono Aviation Boeing 737-200, registration C-GTVO performing flight MBK-791 from Mary River,NU to Iqaluit,NU (Canada) with 107 people on board, was climbing out of Mary River when at about 11,000 feet the crew received a warning the the right hand starter valve (engine JT8D) was open. A check of the engine gauges show the oil quantity was reading 0 and the the oil temperature was 150 degrees C. The related checklist was completed and the engine was shut down. The crew declared Mayday and returned to Mary River for a safe landing.

The Canadian TSB wrote, this was the first of two occurrences: "The operator's maintenance found the oil quantity gauge connector on the sending unit was broken. MEL 79-01 was applied and the connector was capped and stowed. The start valve and pressure switch were replaced. The aircraft was inspected for the overweight landing and was found serviceable."

About 3 hours later, now flight MBK-795 to Iqaluit the aircraft departed again, but at 9000 feet the crew again received a warning the #2 starter value was open. The crew shut the engine down again, declared PAN PAN and returned to Mary River for a safe landing on runway 30.

The TSB wrote: "This was the second similar occurrence for the aircraft. The operator's maintenance carried out extensive electrical wiring troubleshooting and discovered one flight deck connector pin shorting against its connector. The connector was replaced, test flights were conducted, and the issue was cleared."
