A Delta Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration N821NW performing flight
DL-133 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Detroit,MI (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 30nm east of Manchester,EN (UK) when the crew decided to return to Amsterdam. The crew requested an autoland back into Amsterdam, ATC told them approach could not guarantee the aerial would be free and would require some delay. The crew accepted a delay, which subsequently got cancelled. The aircraft performed an auto-land on Amsterdam's runway 18R about 90 minutes after departure.
A passenger reported he noticed a fellow passenger was brushing maggots off the chair besides her with a piece of paper, the woman subsequently explained the maggots appeared to fall from the overhead bins. Alerted cabin crew opened the overhead bin to determine where the maggots came from, about 10 maggots fell down upon opening the bin. The maggots were traced to a bag in the overhead bin, upon opening of the bag everybody near the bag held their noses. The owner of the bag explained it contained fish wrapped in newspaper. Cabin crew wrapped the bag into plastics and took it to the back of the aircraft. In the meantime other passengers started to look out for maggots, too, using the flashlights of their mobile phones. The flight crew subsequently announced they were returning to Amsterdam.
The airline reported the aircraft returned to Amsterdam due to an improperly packed carry-on bag. The passengers were rebooked onto the next available flights. The aircraft was taken out of service for cleaning.
The aircraft remained on the ground in Amsterdam for about 26 hours, then positioned to Detroit and is currently still on the ground in Detroit about 52 hours after landing back in Amsterdam.
