A Delta Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N386DA performing flight
DL-838 from New York JFK,NY to San Diego,CA (USA) with 162 people on board, was in the initial climb out of JFK's runway 22R when the crew just before handed off to departure declared emergency due to a bird strike on the runway and advised they needed to return to the field. The aircraft levelled off at 2000 feet, was handed off to departure and requested to land on runway 31L. The crew subsequently reported they had multiple bird strikes at about 1200 feet, the right hand engine (CFM56) failed but was kept running at idle, they were going to land overweight. The crew queried whether the ILS would be available for 31L but was told it would take some time to get it up, hence the crew opted for a RNAV approach to runway 31L. The aircraft landed safely on runway 31L about 75 minutes after departure.
A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N3765 is estimated to reach San Diego with a delay of about 2.5 hours.
