An Edelweiss Airbus A320-200, registration HB-IJW performing flight WK-280 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Ponta Delgada (Portugal), was climbing out of Zurich's runway 28 when the aircraft received a bird strike. The crew continued the climb, after levelling off at FL330 over France the crew decided to return to Zurich. The aircraft burned off fuel and landed safely on runway 34 about 2:45 hours after departure.

The airline reported in the moment of the bird strike the crew decided to continue the flight and do further checks, between Lyon and Toulouse the crew decided to return to Zurich as a precaution. A replacement aircraft departed one hour after the occurrence aircraft landed.

A replacement A320-200 registration HB-IJU departed Zurich about 2:40 hours after HB-IJW landed and reached Ponta Delgada with a delay of about 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 32 hours after landing.
