An El Al Boeing 787-9, registration 4X-EDH performing flight LY-28 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Tel Aviv (Israel), was enroute at FL340 about 210nm east of New York,NY (USA) when the crew needed to descend the aircraft to FL200 due to a problem with one of their engines (Trent 1000) and decided to divert to New York JFK,NY (USA) for a safe landing on runway 31L about one hour after the decision to turn around. The crew advised no assistance was needed and taxied to the apron.

The airport authority reported the crew reported a minor engine problem.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in New York about 24 hours after landing.

In the evening of Nov 29th 2023 The Aviation Herald received information that the crew received a "ENG OVERHEAT" EICAS message for the left hand engine, performed the related checklists, reduced the engine to idle thrust, and the message disappeared.
