An Endeavor Air Canadair CRJ-900 on behalf of Delta Airlines, registration N320PQ performing flight
DL-4826 from Toronto,ON (Canada) to New York JFK,NY (USA) with 74 people on board, was climbing through about 11,000 feet out of Toronto's runway 06L when the crew donned their oxygen masks and declared Mayday Mayday reporting there were sparks in the cockpit, an electrical fire. The aircraft stopped the climb at 11,000 feet and returned to Toronto, the crew advised it appeared the fire was out, the captain's windshield heater had sparked up. The aircraft landed safely on Toronto's runway 06L about 25 minutes after departure.
The aircraft remained on the ground in Toronto for about 49 hours before returning to service.
On Feb 8th 2024 the Canadian TSB reported that the aircraft "was climbing though 8000 feet when the flight crew noticed a burnt electrical smell in the cockpit. The flight crew were checking the cockpit when the captain's side windshield electrical heater control unit began to emit sparks/flames. The flight crew donned oxygen masks, declared an emergency and requested a return to CYYZ. The flight crew turned off the windshield heat and the sparks/flames stopped. The flight crew conducted a normal approach and landed without further incident. Maintenance found arcing on the left windshield power terminal block into the inner surface of the windshield and no damage to the wires. The windshield will be replaced."
