An Enter Air Boeing 737-800, registration SP-ENO performing flight
E4-4004 from Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) to Katowice (Poland), had been enroute at FL240 all the way from Sharm el Sheikh to Bulgaria when about 40nm east of Sofia (Bulgaria) the crew initiated an emergency descent, the controller advised the crew that minimum safety altitude was 12,000 feet. The crew descended the aircraft to FL120 and continued to Katowice, where the aircraft landed without further incident about 95 minutes after leaving FL240.
Poland's PLBWL reported the aircraft had been dispatched under minimum equipment list requirements and therefore maintained FL240 for cruise. At the control zone of Sofia the crew received a cabin pressure warning, worked the related checklists, commenced an emergency descent to FL120 and analysed the situation. The crew subsequently decided to continue the flight to Katowice. The occurrence was rated an incident and is being investigated by the PKBWL.
On Sep 15th 2023 the PKBWL released their resolution in Polish effectively ending the investigation stating that the cause of the occurrence was the rupture of a pressure seal in the forward zone that together with the inoperative right hand pack caused the cabin altitude to increase. The aircraft had been released under MEL with the right hand bleed air valve inoperative and the right hand pack disabled limiting the aircraft to FL250.
