An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787-9, registration ET-AXK performing flight ET-500 from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy), was climbing out of Addis Ababa's runway 07R when above FL200 the crew reported problems with an engine (GEnx), they suspected an engine fire and shut the engine down. The aircraft returned to Addis Ababa for a safe landing on runway 07R about 50 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 787-9 registration ET-AXS reached Rome with a delay of about 2.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Addis Ababa about 6 days after landing back.
