A Finnair Airbus A330-300, registration OH-LTR performing flight
AY-33 from Helsinki (Finnland) to Seattle,WA (USA), was enroute at FL340 about 720nm northnorthwest of Helsinki over the Norwegian/Barents Sea when the crew decided to turn around and return to Helsinki due to problems with the airconditioning system. The aircraft descended to FL300, then FL200 for the return and landed safely back in Helsinki about 3:40 hours after departure.
The aircraft remained on the ground for about 80 minutes, then departed again and was enroute at FL360 about 440nm northnorthwest of Helsinki when the crew again decided to return to Helsinki due to problems with the air conditioning. The aircraft again descended to FL200 and landed safely back in Helsinki about 2.5 hours after departure.
The flight was cancelled.
The airline reported maintennace believed they had fixed the air conditioning system after the first return. It is rare that an aircraft needs to return twice. The air conditioning system is a matter of convenience only, there was no danger to anyone.
