A KLM Airbus A330-300, registration PH-AKB performing flight KL-651 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Washington Dulles,DC (USA), was enroute at FL320 about to reach the English coast when the crew consulted with maintenance and decided to return to Amsterdam after being informed, that a honeycomb panel broken into pieces identified to have originated from the inside of an engine (CF6) had been found on the runway. The crew advised that they had been hit by at least one pigeon on departure and temporarily had the smell of a pigeon in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely back on Amsterdam's runway 27 about 70 minutes after departure. Maintenance was checking the inlet of the left hand engine after landing.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 47 hours before returning to service.
