A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIFD performing flight
LH-515 from Cancun (Mexico) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was climbing through FL310 about 75nm west of Havana (Cuba) when the crew decided to return to Cancun due to problems with the #3 engine (CFM56, inboard right hand) and shut the engine shut down. The aircraft drifted initially down to FL280, later to FL200 and landed safely back on Cancun's runway 12R about 100 minutes after departure.
The aircraft remained on the ground in Cancun until Mar 26th 2021 and is currently (Mar 26th 15:05Z) positioning back to Frankfurt.
On Mar 26th 2021 the airline reported the crew shut the #4 engine down and decided to return to Cancun. The engine problems did not result in smoke or fire. The engine was being replaced with the replacement engine having been delivered to Cancun on Mar 25th 2021.
On Mar 26th 2021 Mexico's Accident Investigation Board reported the #3 engine (CFM56, inboard right hand) suffered a loss of power about one hour into the flight. The crew returned to Cancun. The occurrence was rated an incident and is being investigated by Mexico's AIB.
