A Lufthansa Boeing 747-800, registration D-ABYR performing flight
LH-403 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was accelerating for takeoff from Newark's runway 22R when another crew called their nosewheels were cocked followed by tower reporting smoke from the nose gear. The crew rejected takeoff at low speed. The other crew added, that their nosewheel appeared to be turned to the left, the LH crew reported their aircraft was turning right, the nose wheel straightened again, they did not need any assistance, it was working again. The aircraft vacated onto taxiway K and returned to the holding point runway 22R. The crew subsequently decided to return to the apron and taxied to the apron via runway 22R.
The flight was cancelled.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Newark about 40 hours after the rejecteed takeoff.
