A Lufthansa Boeing 747-800, registration D-ABYQ performing flight
LH-717 from Tokyo Haneda (Japan) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 341 passengers and 20 crew, was enroute at FL310 over the Pacific Ocean about 780nm northeast of Tokyo when the crew decided to return to Tokyo. The aircraft landed safely back on Haneda's runway 16L about 4:10 hours after departure.
Japan's Ministry of Transport reported a strange odour on board of the aircraft prompting an emergency landing in Tokyo.
