A Nolinor Boeing 737-200, registration C-GNLK performing flight N5-969 from Goose Lake,NU to Yellowknife,NU (Canada) with 3 crew only, was enroute at FL340 about 170nm northeast of Yellowknife when the crew received a brief fire indication for the right hand engine (JT8D). The crew initiated a descent to FL240 in anticipation that the engine needed to be shut down. After levelling off at FL240 the crew received another fire indication for the right hand engine, this time permanent. The crew shut the engine down and continued to Yellowknife for a safe landing about 30 minutes after the permanent fire indication. Emergency services checked the aircraft and did not find any evidence of fire.
The Canadian TBS reported maintenance determined the fire indication was false due to a fault with the fire sensor loop #2 on the #2 engine. The aircraft was repaired.
