A Nordwind Boeing 777-200, registration VQ-BJA performing flight
N4-522 from Cayo Coco (Cuba) to Moscow Sheremetyevo (Russia), was in the initial climb out of Cayo Coco when the crew received a fire indication for the left hand engine (Trent 892), stopped the climb and returned to Cayo Coco for a safe landing about 30 minutes after departure.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 18 hours after landing back.
Rosaviatsia reported the technical condition of the aircraft is being evaluated.
On May 19th 2021 The Aviation Herald received information, that there had been an undercowl fire around the engine core below the thrust reverser cowling. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, the engine is being replaced.
On Jun 11th 2021 Rostransnador (Russia's Ministry of Transport) issued a decret prohibiting the operation of Nordwind's Boeing 777s under ETOPS rules. Part of the reasons for this decision was listed as a mechanics performing maintenance on the Trent engines of VQ-BJA without being authorized/certified to do such maintenance work. Following that maintenance work the aircraft suffered the engine fire indication on departure from Cayo Coco.
On Jul 29th 2021 Germany's BFU reported they have joined the investigation by a foreign investigation authority because the engine had been designed/produced in Germany. The crew received a left hand engine fire warning and returned to the point of departure.
