An Air Peace Boeing 737-300, registration 5N-BQO performing flight
P4-7191 from Port Harcourt to Lagos (Nigeria) with 133 passengers and 6 crew, landed on Lagos' runway 18R at about 11:20L (10:20Z) but suffered a hard touch down causing both nose wheels to separate from the nose gear strut. The aircraft skidded to a halt on the runway on main wheels and the rest of the nose gear strut. There was one minor injury. The aircraft sustained substantial damage as did the runway.
Nigeria's AIB have opened an investigation into the occurrence stating the aircraft's nose wheels collapsed on landing on runway 18R. There was one minor injury.
The airline reported due to a sudden weather change the captain requested the longer international runway rather than the domestic runway. After landing safely while attempting to turn off the runway the nose gear developed a problem and partially collapsed.
On Nov 18th 2019 the NAIB released their preliminary report stating the first officer (31, CPL, 1,090 hours total, 850 hours on type) was pilot flying, the captain (32, ATPL, 5,100 hours total, 4,900 hours on type) was pilot monitoring. The NAIB described the landing:
At 11:26:12 h, the CT gave APK7191 final landing clearance as “APK7191 exercise caution, runway surface is wet, wind 290o /06 kt runway 18R cleared to land’’. The crew responded as follows: “cleared to land runway 18R APK7191”.
At about 500 ft, the wiper was selected to HIGH position by the PM due to intensity of the rain, who also reported field in sight with affirmation from the PF. At 100 ft above ground level (AGL), auto pilot was disengaged by the PF.
According to the Captain, during the callouts: 50, 30, the PM noticed that the aircraft was not aligned with the centre line of the runway, and took control, after announcing “I have controls” and “corrected back on the centreline”. The crew stated that, “...the right wheels touched down, simultaneously, we lost visibility and nose wheel touched down… We heard a loud screeching noise and metals grinding, we also saw a lot of debris flying around”.
The NAIB reported the aircraft came to a stop 2491 meters past the runway threshold. Half of the right wheel assembly of the nose gear was found 971 meters past the runway threshold, the left nose wheel assembly was found 1058 meters from the runway threshold and the larger half of the right nose wheel was found 1129 meters past the threshold. Runway tracks showing the aircraft skidding on the nose gear strut extended from 971 meters past the threshold to its final position.
On Oct 8th 2025 Nigeria's NSIB reported that the final report has been drafted and is currently being prepared for public release.
