An Air Peace Boeing 737-300, registration 5N-BUQ performing flight P4-7159 from Owerri to Lagos (Nigeria) with 95 passengers and 6 crew, was in the initial climb out of Owerri's runway 35 when the left hand engine emitted a number of bangs, the EGT went above limits with N1 and N2 reducing rapidly, prompting the crew to work the "engine severe damage or fire" checklist and shut the engine down. THe aircraft levelled off at 2500 feet, the crew contacted Port Harcourt Approach and requested vectors to Port Harcourt (about 29nm southwest of Owerri). The aircraft performed an ILS approach to Port Harcourt's runway 21 and landed without further incident about 20 minutes after departure.

On Apr 26th 2022 Nigeria's AIB released their preliminary report rating the occurrence a serious incident. There were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft. The investigation is planning an engine tear down.
