A S7 Sibir Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration VP-BEN performing freight flight S7-8817 (dep Oct 13th) from Irkutsk (Russia) to Hong Kong (China) with 4 crew, landed on Hong Kong's runway 07L at 00:03L (16:03Z Oct 13th), slowed down and attempted to vacate the runway via high speed turn off A7, however, mistook a structure prior to the turn off as the taxiway and turned off the runway too early coming to a stop on soft ground off the paved surface of the runway but within the protected runway area. The runway needed to be closed until the aircraft could be towed to the apron about 30 minutes later.
The aircraft was able to depart Hong Kong about 2:45 hours on the ground.
On Nov 16th 2021 Hong Kong's CAD reported: "While following Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions to vacate the runway via Taxiway (TWY) A7, the subject aircraft taxied onto a pavement area between TWY A6 and TWY A7. The pavement area is a section of a twin-taxiway system being built for future aircraft operation. The aircraft stopped in front of marker boards on the pavement area and was instructed by ATC to shut down all engines. After inspection by ground engineer, the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) advised that there was no damage to both the aircraft and runway facilities. No one was injured in the occurrence."
