A Skytrans Australia de Havilland Dash 8-100, registration VH-QQF performing flight QN-710 from Kidston,QL to Townsville,QL (Australia), was on approach to Townsville when the aircraft was cleared for a visual approach to runway 07 when the crew received a TCAS resolution advisory to descend. The aircraft descended out of the conflict and continued for a safe landing on Townsville's runway 07.

Australia's ATSB reported a private aircraft was conducting a training flight about 10nm west of the aircraft and advised ATC they would not enter controlled airspace. The crew was advised of the Dash 8 and cleared to maintain visual separation, however, the crew did not sight the Dash 8 until the aircraft were only 0.6nm horizontally apart at the same height on converging trajectories. Until the Dash 8 descended out of conflict the horizontal distance reduced to 0.3nm. The ATSB opened a short investigation into the occurrence.
