A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N427WN performing flight WN-1697 from San Diego,CA to Oakland,CA (USA) with 142 people on board, was climbing out of San Diego's runway 27 when the crew requested a return to San Diego via a right hand turn reporting an engine (CFM56) overheat. THe aircraft stopped the climb at 7000 feet and was handed off to SoCal Approach, however, due to congestion on that frequency directly contacted San Diego Tower, who verified the crew had San Diego in sight and cleared the flight for a visual approach to runway 27. The aircraft continued downwind, the crew advised both of their engines had overheat indications with all other indications normal, was cleared to land runway 27, requested all emergency services in attendance towards the end of the runway, turned final and landed safely on runway 27 about 15 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-700 registration N7747C reached Oakland with a delay of about 2.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 18 hours after landing back.
