A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N8648A performing flight WN-5907 from St. Louis,MO to Sacramento,CA (USA), was climbing out of St. Louis' runway 29 when the crew stopped the climb at about 10,500 feet reporting they had a left hand engine (CFM56) failure. The aircraft returned to St. Louis for a safe landing on runway 30 about 25 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-8 MAX registration N8772M reached Sacramento with a delay of about 4:20 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in St. Louis about 10 hours after landing back.

A passenger reported a fellow passenger observed streak of flames and smoke from the left hand engine.

The FAA stated: "Southwest Airlines Flight 5907 returned and landed safely at St. Louis Lambert International Airport around 3:30 p.m. local time on Friday, April 19, after the crew reported an engine issue. The Boeing 737 was headed to Sacramento International Airport in California. The FAA will investigate. "
