A TuiFly Nederlands Airbus A320-200, registration N276GX performing flight OR-3122 from Izmir (Turkey) to Amsterdam (Netherlands), was on approach to Amsterdam maintaining 3000 feet and cleared for the final approach to runway 18C but went through the localizer and appeared to line up with runway 18R.

A KLM Boeing 737-900, registration PH-BXP performing flight KL-1670 from Barcelona,SP (Spain) to Amsterdam (Netherlands), maintained 2000 feet until being cleared for the final approach to runway 18R and lined up with runway 18R.

Due to overshooting the localizer the horizontal distance between the aircraft reduced to about 1480 feet initially with still 1000 feet horizontal separation, however, when the A320 started their final descent the vertical distance also reduced to about 500 feet. Both aircraft initiated go arounds and climbed, the A320 turned left, the B739 turned right onto diverging trajectories. Both aircraft repositioned for another approach to their assigned runways and landed safely about 9 minutes (B739) 12 minutes (A320) after the go arounds.

Netherlands' ATC provider LVNL reported: "On Tuesday 18 July, during the parallel approach on the Zwanenburgbaan (18C) and Polderbaan (18R) for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, two aircraft approached each other closer than prescribed by the separation minima. LVNL reported the incident to the Dutch Safety Board and the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate. LVNL itself is also investigating this incident."
