A United Boeing 737-9 MAX, registration N37535 performing flight UA-573 from Denver,CO to San Francisco,CA (USA), was enroute at FL240 about 120nm west of Denver when the crew decided to return to Denver due to the smell of smoke on board. The crew later advised they were planning to taxi to the apron, just wanted emergency services to have a look at the aircraft to verify everything looked normal, the crew requested and was approved to maintain high speed until landing. The aircraft landed safely back on Denver's runway 16L about 45 minutes after departure.

The electronics bay of the aircraft was inspected after landing.

The airline told passengers that an indicator light on the flight deck illuminated requiring maintenance.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N36469 reached San Francisco with a delay of about 5.5 hours. The subsequent sector to Seattle was cancelled.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for 59 hours, then performed a test flight but is still on the ground in Denver about 15 hours after landing back from the test flight.
