A United Boeing 737-900, registration N38459 performing flight UA-750 from Calgary,AB (Canada) to Houston Intercontinental,TX (USA) with 178 people on board, was climbing out of Calgary when the crew received a right hand engine (CFM56) overheat indication and decided to return to Calgary.

Following maintenance intervention the aircraft departed again about 4:20 hours after the first departure and was climbing through 13,000 feet when the crew again received a right hand engine overheat indication, worked the related checklists reducing the engine to idle which extinguished the overheat indication and returned to Calgary for another safe landing.

The Canadian TSB reported there had been no EGT exceedance. Maintenance found faults with both right hand engine fire loops, replace all fire loops, the engine core harnesses and replaced the engine/APU fire detection module. Subsequent tests did not reveal any malfunction.
