A United Boeing 737-900, registration N62892 performing flight
UA-551 from Newark,NJ to Denver,CO (USA) with 199 people on board, was enroute at FL340 about 200nm northeast of Wichita,KS (USA) when the aircraft first descended to FL280 and then to FL240. The aircraft subsequently diverted to Wichita reporting they had a problem with one of their engines (CFM56). The aircraft landed safely on Wichita's runway 19R about 70 minutes after leaving FL340.
The FAA reported: "United Airlines Flight 551 landed safely at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in Kansas around 5 p.m. local time on Thursday, Dec. 14th, after the crew reported an engine issue." and opened an investigation.
Airport emergency services reported after landing a fire broke out in the right hand engine of the aircraft which was quickly extinguished. The passengers disembarked normally at the gate.
A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N61886 reached Denver with a delay of about 5.5 hours.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Wichita about 29 hours after landing.
