A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A331 performing flight VN-1402 from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi (Vietnam), was climbing out of Ho Chi Minh City following the assigned standard instrument departure route KADUM 2D when the aircraft encountered heavy rain mixed with hail, both windshields cracked as result. The crew decided to stop the climb at about 10,000 feet MSL, declared PAN PAN and returned to Ho Chi Minh City for a safe landing on runway 25L about 20 minutes after departure.
A replacement A321-200 registration VN-A329 reached Dong Hoi with a delay of about 2 hours.
