A XE Jet Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of NG Eagle, registration 5N-BZZ performing flight 2N-902 from Abuja to Lagos (Nigeria) with 49 passengers and 3 crew, landed on Lagos' runway 18L at about 13:00L (12:00Z) but veered off the runway and came to a stop on soft ground (grass) next to B5 about 2000 meters/6600 feet down the runway. Emergency services responded. There were no injuries.
Local sources report a heavy downpour at the time of the landing.
Nigeria's NSIB reported they have dispatched investigators on site.
NG Eagle reported their flight 2N-902 operated by an XE Jet Aircraft suffered a runway excursion upon landing at Lagos due to heavy standing water and rainy conditions present at landing.
XE Jet reported their aircraft 5N-BZZ suffered a runway excursion while landing at Lagos. The airline is cooperating with Nigeria's CAA and NSIB.
Later the NSIB reported:
Preliminary fact-finding revealed that the incident occurred at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. The aircraft with registration number 5N BZZ, operated by XeJet Airline on behalf of NG Eagle Airlines, was completing a scheduled flight from Abuja to Lagos with 49 passengers and 3 crew members onboard. The flight departed Abuja at 11:10 a.m., maintaining a cruising altitude of Flight Level 280.
It was cleared for landing after being held for 50 minutes in Lagos, waiting for the weather to clear. The aircraft then landed on Runway 18 Left (18L) and went off the end of the runway to the left (?) of the centreline. It stopped on the grass verge approximately 326 meters from the threshold of Runway 36R.
The captain subsequently shut down the engines and commanded an evacuation through a controlled disembarkation. Three exit doors were used for the evacuation process, including two over-wing windows and one forward exit door. There were no reported injuries or fatalities as a result of the incident.
However, damage was sustained to the aircraft’s nose landing gear and both main landing gear tyres.
On Sep 11th 2024 the NSIB released their preliminary report summarizing the sequence of events:
At 12:04 h, information from the Tower Watch Log revealed that another aircraft, NUA0509, on approach to Runway 18L, DNMM, reported diverting to DNAS (Asaba International airport) due to weather. The crew of 5N-BZZ stated during a postoccurrence interview that the runway was subsequently closed by ATC due to weather.
From FDR data, at about 12:06 h, 5N-BZZ entered a hold at 8,000 ft, descending to, and holding at 5,000 ft. The crew of 5N-BZZ reported that the decision to take hold was due to runway closure following a PIREP1 by NUA0509. 5N-BZZ was in the hold for about 8 minutes and was subsequently cleared by the ATC for an ILS approach on runway 18L after the runway was reopened.
At 12:25 h, while on approach, 5N-BZZ reported 9 miles on the localiser. It was given airfield surface condition: visibility of 1,000 meters in heavy rain with thunderstorms. 5N-BZZ was asked by the Lagos Approach to report its intention, as the preceding traffic had carried out a missed approach due to heavy rain in a thunderstorm with a visibility of 1,000 m. 5N-BZZ responded, "We are proceeding to minimums", and ATC acknowledged.
At 12:26 h, 5N-BZZ received landing clearance, “5N-BZZ surface wind indicating 050/07 kt, reported wind 280/07 kt, clear to land runway 18L," which the crew acknowledged.
At 12:28 h, 5N-BZZ reported 1.9 miles with “landing sign in sight.” According to the Tower transcript, the Tower responded to 5N-BZZ, "Say again cleared to land, surface wind 280/07 kt 18L." However, the aircraft did not respond.
At 12:29 h, 5N-BZZ touched down runway 18L at a distance of 841.36 m from the threshold, travelled a distance of 2,201.84 m during the landing roll and overran the runway into the grass verge. Tyre marks showed that at Link 5, the aircraft was to the left of the runway centerline. After overrunning the runway, the aircraft veered further left of the extended centerline, stopping at a location 06°34'09"N, 003°19'46"E with an elevation of 76.83 ft.
At 12:30 h, Tower sounded the crash alarm and alerted the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), providing details of the aircraft description and location.
At 12:34 h, 5N-BZZ reported having the ARFFS on site. All passengers and crew disembarked via the main entry door using a ladder. No passengers or crew were injured. The incident occurred in daylight.
