A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration N445WN performing flight WN-4699 from Dallas Love,TX to Fort Lauderdale,FL (USA), was enroute at FL390 about 110nm southwest of Pensacola,FL when a passenger's cell phone began to emit smoke prompting the crew to divert to Pensacola, while cabin crew secured the phone into a battery containment bag. The aircraft landed safely in Pensacola about 25 minutes later.

Passengers reported a man and a woman travelling together had started arguing and the man slapped his cell phone onto the woman, the cell phone subsequently started smouldering. Smoke appeared in the cabin, someone called fire, and cabin crew rushed to action.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Pensacola after a dispute between two passengers travelling together resulted in a broken cell phone and smouldered. The phone was put into a containment bag by flight attendants. The two passengers disembarked in Pensacola, the aircraft then continued on to Fort Lauderdale.

The aircraft reached Fort Lauderdale with a delay of 90 minutes.
