An Alkan Air Dornier Do-228-200, registration C-GAKI performing a visual flight from Whitehorse,YT to Watson Lake,YT (Canada) with 4 people on board, was enroute at 11,000 feet about 5 minutes after levelling off at 11,000 feet when the crew received a low oil pressure indication for the left hand engine (TPE331). The crew shut the engine down, briefed the passengers and returned to Whitehorse for a safe single engine landing.
The Canadian TSB reported the crew observed oil on the exterior of the airframe around the engine cowl area, shut the engine down but did not declare emergency. Maintenance subsequently discovered the engine oil cooler was cracked resulting in the oil leak.
