An American Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N808AW performing flight AA-2854 from Des Moines,IA to Charlotte,NC (USA), was in the initial climb out of Des Moines' runway 23 when the aircraft collided with a flock of birds prompting the crew to stop the climb at about 5000 feet and return to Des Moines for a safe landing on runway 13 about 10 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported: "AIRCRAFT STRUCK BIRDS ON DEPARTURE DAMAGING LEFT ENGINE, RIGHT WING AND BOTTOM OF FUSELAGE, DES MOINES, IA.", damage was "unknown" and the occurrence was rated an incident.
