An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N996AN performing flight
AA-622 from Philadelphia,PA (USA) to Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), was cleared to climb to FL230 and was climbing through 17000 feet when the crew requested and was cleared to level off at 17000 feet, they were working on an issue. The crew subsequently advised they were not declaring emergency and did not need assistance, but needed to return to Philadelphia due to a problem with the left hand engine (V2533), that was now being operated in a degradated mode. The aircraft returned to Philadelphia for a safe landing on runway 27R about 45 minutes after departure.
A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration N540UW reached Punta Cana with a delay of 4 hours.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Philadelphia about 30 hours after landing back.
