An Asiana Boeing 747-400 freighter, registration HL7420 performing flight OZ-285 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Seoul (South Korea), was climbing out of San Francisco's runway 28R when departure informed the crew that an airport vehicle had seen sparks coming off the aircraft. The crew stopped the climb at 8000 feet, entered a hold and returned to San Francisco for a safe landing on runway 28R about 70 minutes after departure.

A ground observer reported excessive noise and flames from an engine (CF6).

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 49 hours.
