An Avianca Airbus A320-200, registration N689TA performing flight AV-632 from San Jose (Costa Rica) to Mexico City (Mexico), was climbing out of San Jose's runway 07 when the left hand engine emitted one bang and one streak of flames. The crew stopped the climb at 10,000 feet and returned to San Jose for a safe landing on runway 25 about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement A320-200 registration N763AV reached Mexico City with a delay of about 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in San Jose about 21 hours after landing back.
