A Cargojet Boeing 757-200, registration C-FGKJ performing flight
W8-566 from Winnipeg,MB to Montreal Mirabel,QC (Canada), had climbed to cruise FL390 when about 45 minutes into the flight the crew received a fire indication for the left hand engine (RB211) and shut the engine down, but did not discharge the fire suppression systems as the fire indication stopped as soon as the engine was reduced to idle thrust. The crew subsequently decided to return to Winnipeg and landed safely on runway 36 about 82 minutes after departure.
The Canadian TSB reported after inspection of the aircraft by maintenance it is being suspected that the fire detection system was defective.
The aircraft returned to service after about 64 hours on the ground.
