A European Air Charter (former Bulgarian Air Charter) McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration LZ-LDP performing flight H6-5004 from Catania to Rome Fiumicino (Italy) with 42 passengers, was climbing out of Catania when an engine emitted a loud bang and failed. The crew shut the engine down and returned to Catania for a safe landing.
Italy's Police Union said, on board were 34 police men to accompany 8 migrants to Rome. Shortly after takeoff an engine "exploded" and the aircraft returned to Catania from where it had just taken off. The airline dispatched another aircraft (registration LZ-LDT) to Catania which completed the flight the following morning.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Catania about 31 hours after landing back.
