A Gol Transportes Aereos Boeing 737-800, registration PR-GXL performing flight G3-1587 from Recife,PE to Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil), was climbing out of Recife's runway 18 when the crew stopped the climb at 3000 feet after the right hand engine (CFM56) suffered repeated compressor stalls. The aircraft returned to Recife for a safe landing on runway 18 about 30 minutes after departure.

The airport reported the aircraft returned to the aerodrome due to an engine problem but the crew did not declare emergency.

Brazil's CENIPA is looking into the occurrence, it can not (yet) be ruled out that a bird strike had occurred.

The flight was cancelled.
