A Piedmont Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N641AE performing flight AA-5962 from Jackson,MS to Charlotte,NC (USA), was in the initial climb out of Jackson's runway 16R when the crew declared emergency reporting they had received a cargo smoke indication and needed to return to Jackson with emergency services on stand by. The aircraft landed safely back on runway 16L about 8 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

A passenger reported the "flight returned to JAN immediately after takeoff with crew stating that a smoke indicator illuminated for the cargo hold. Aircraft stopped on runway for approx 15 minutes and was evaluated by emergency services - believed to be partially supplemented by equipment from the Air National Guard that shares the runway/airport - before passengers disembarking normally."
