A PSA Airlines Canadair CRJ-700 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N541EA performing flight AA-5179 from Philadelphia,PA to Birmingham,AL (USA), was climbing out of Philadelphia when the crew stopped the climb at FL280 due to captain's windshield cracking. The aircraft descended to 9000 feet and diverted to Washington Dulles for a safe landing on runway 19R about 80 minutes after departure.

A replacement Canadair CRJ-700 registration N527EA reached Birmingham with a delay of about 8.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 9 hours, then positioned to Norfolk climbing to a maximum of 10,000 feet and remained on the ground in Norfolk for 3 days before returning to service.
