UA-5184 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Mason City,IA (USA), was enroute at FL280 about 70nm east of Waterloo,IA (USA) when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (CF34) down. The aircraft diverted to Waterloo for a safe landing on runway 30 about 40 minutes later.
A replacement CRJ-200 registration N259PS reached Mason City with a delay of about 5 hours.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 14 hours after landing.
