A United Airbus A319-100, registration N829UA performing flight
UA-1045 from Newark,NJ to Austin,TX (USA), was enroute at FL300 about 40nm west of Newark,NJ (USA) when the crew advised they were working on an issue and might need to divert. The crew subsequently reported a problem with one of their fuel valves so that the fuel in the center tank could not be used, they had insufficient fuel to reach their destination as result. After consulting with maintenance and dispatch the crew decided to return to Newark, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 22L about 90 minutes after departure.
A replacement A320-200 registration N435UA reached Austin with a delay of about 3.5 hours.
The occurrence aircraft returned to service after about 12 hours on the ground.
