A United Boeing 787-8, registration N28912 performing flight
UA-946 (dep Nov 3rd) from Washington Dulles,DC (USA) to Amsterdam (Netherlands), was enroute at FL380 over the Atlantic Ocean about 400nm east of St. John's,NL (Canada) when the crew decided to turn around and divert to Newark,NJ (USA) after consulting with maintenance due to decreasing oil quantity for the left hand engine (GEnx). While diverting to Newark the crew noticed the oil quantity was decreasing even further and decided to divert to Halifax,NS (Canada) declaring PAN PAN. The aircraft landed safely on Halifax's runway 23 about 2:45 hours after turning around.
The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found the oil cap for the left hand engine unsecured. The cap was secured, the oil was cleaned from the cowl area and the engine was serviced. A leak check did not reveal any further leak.
