An American Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N601AW performing flight AA-2332 (sched Apr 27th, act Apr 28th) from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Amarillo,TX (USA) with 96 people on board, was climbing out of Dallas' runway 18L when the crew declared Mayday reporting smoke in the cockpit and stopped the climb at 12000 feet. Subsequently the communication deteriorated forcing crew to request repeat instructions repeatedly ("say again"). The aircraft landed safely on runway 18R about 18 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration N9006 reached Amarillo with a delay of about 8 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 19 hours after landing.
