An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N812NN performing flight AA-1239 from Boston,MA to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 160 people on board, had just reached FL300 when the crew requested to hold position to troubleshoot an issue, subsequently explaining they suspected a fuel leak, declared emergency and were returning to Boston, they wanted to get on the ground as quickly as possible. The aircraft landed safely on Boston's runway 22L about 45 minutes after departure. After landing the crew requested emergency services to check their right hand side advising, the right hand engine (CFM56) was shut down.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N344PP reached Chicago with a delay of about 17:10 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 24 hours after landing.
